12th Annual Game Development Competition for High School and University Students

The CYENS Center of Excellence in collaboration with the Computer Science Departments of the University of Cyprus and the University of Nicosia organizes, under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth, and Cyta as main sponsor, the 12th “GDC / LOGPAIGNION 2022” Competition for the school / academic year 2021-2022.

The competition has been run with great success for eleven consecutive years and is aimed at students attending gymnasiums, high schools, technical and private schools and universities in Cyprus. The “GDC / LOGIPAIGNION” competition is particularly important for secondary and technical education students, as well as for university students, as it encourages inventiveness and creativity, as well as logical and analytical thinking in problem solving. complex. Computer game creation incorporates all of the above and additionally requires cooperation, communication and coordination among team members. At the same time, the educational aspect of the game development process is highlighted by the need to apply specific sub-skills to the process such as the use of graphic design and programming tools while working in the context of subjects of interest to our young people.

In addition, the growing interest in science and technology, graphics, augmented and virtual reality, robotics, artificial intelligence, intelligent systems, etc., create the need for an event like this. The event, the only one of its kind in Cyprus, provides a creative outlet for young people to use their skills and abilities and will boost their enthusiasm for game development while inspiring more people to explore this path.

An announcement has already been made in schools regarding the competition. The registration deadline is December 17, 2021. Students should be organized into groups, which should be led by a supervisor / advisor who can either be a teacher or another adult, with the written consent of the participant’s parents or guardians. . The goal is to develop or design a computer game. The last day for the submission of the game is March 31, 2022 and the contest final is scheduled to take place on May 14, 2022. In addition, all contest participants will have the opportunity to attend seminars and workshops led by experts on design and development. computer game. The seminars and workshops are scheduled for January and February 2022 in Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca and Paphos.

This year a theme / element has been defined for each category

  • Junior track (Gymnasium students): Water
  • Senior Track (High School Students): Vent
  • Advanced Track (university students): Earth
  • Game design track (all ages): Sun.

The prizes, which will be donated by Cyta, the major sponsor, will be awarded to the top three teams in each category.

It is important to note that the competition is for the creation of purely educational games and entries must not contain inappropriate, obscene, abusive or defamatory material, they do not promote discrimination or violence against humans or animals, and do not include scenes or events of violence.

The competition is again supported this year by Wargaming, which contributes with the participation of its experts in the seminars and workshops that will be offered to the participants in the competition, and an advisory role throughout the duration of the competition.

The competition has media support from the Phileleftheros group and Active radio station, as well as from the Alpha Cyprus television channel. The event is also supported by the Computer Science Departments of Frederick, Neapolis Paphos and UCLan Cyprus Universities, with their active participation in both seminars and workshops and in promoting the competition. Finally, the Cyprus Computer Association and the Cyprus Youth Board support the competition by offering significant help in promoting the institution and its objectives.
